The fishing these weeks have been exceptional. Most of the bigger fish have been coming off the bank while fishing a wacky style Senko of Yum Dinger (5 to 7). The smaller soft plastic jerkworm will produce smaller bass in the 3-7 pound range which are mostly the male bass protecting the nest while the bigger soft plastic jerkworm will produce the bigger female bass. Joanne Drake landed this bass on the beginning of February which weighed in at 14.1 pounds. She landed it on a Senko up tight on the bank. Joanne and husband Don ended up with another 10 pounder and 3 that weighed in at 9 pounds. Deb Venkel also landed her 11.4 pounder up close to the bank the same way. Fishing the Dingers and Senkos wacky style has been the key. The o-ring will help you save the worm and allow the angler to catch more bass off the same worm. The Yum Dinger seems to hold up the best and comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Chris Curtin and son Grant landed some big bass as well. Grant ended up with an 11.5 pound bass caught on a Carolina rig with a watermelon lizard. Chris also landed an 11 pounder the next day on the same set up. The Curtin family ended up with 4 bass over 10 pounds for their trip which all came on watermelon lizards. The better fishing during the mid-day has been on flats in the middle of the lake. Deep diving crank baits have been pulling up some large bass.
The DD22 and the Fat Free Shad in the Citrus color has been the best color. Most Anglers are working the cliffs and cranking the bait as fast as they can - then pause and cranking fast - then wham! A lot of quality 7-8 pounders have been coming in like this. Smaller size swimbaits have been producing some giant bass. Chuck Aedo landed not one but two 12 pound bass using the Storm Wildeye Swimshad. Be sure to check out next report to see what the Bassmaster crew had to say about the fishing on Lake El Salto.
