The water temperature is starting to cool down as is the air temperature. As for the fishing, many quality fish have been caught but the numbers are still down. The average boat is landing about 30-50 bass a day and most of them are in the 5-7 pound range. Jay Yelas, winner of the 2002 Citgo Bassmaster Classic, stated that he had the best buzzbait fishing of his life. He landed many fish in the 4-8 pound range with an 8.12 pound largemouth being the largest. Medium diver crankbaits have probably been the premier bait of choice. Most of the 11-pounders have been caught on medium and deep diving crankbaits. The Rattletrap bite has still been strong as well. Soft plastic jerkbaits have been successful early in the mornings and late in the afternoons. The most success this report was accomplished by Howard and Anna Shelby who both landed 11-pounders of their own in the same day. Howard also landed a 9-pounder. The worm bite is still slow but is starting to pick up. One of the 11-pounders came by Carolina rigging a 5” grub. |
