We are catching a lot of numbers but the big fish have been slow. It is spawn time south of the border. There have been many 7- and 8- pounders caught during this time which have been mostly males protecting the nest. The 10- and 11- pounders caught did have eggs and some of them had even released them already. We have had customers have 80+ fish days but mostly small males. The big fish will pick up after the spawn! The most productive lures have been soft plastic jerkbaits, especially Senkos by Gary Yamamoto. Green pumpkin, red flake and watermelon are the number one colors. One can hook the soft plastic jerkbaits both ways (wacky style and regular). These methods have been producing many fish with an occasional big one. Hard plastic jerkbaits have also been producing in the colors mentioned above. Most of the fishing has been done close to the bank. The bass do spawn a little deeper than the lakes in the states due to the water fluctuation on the lake. They have been also known to spawn in trees and even in 15 feet of water. This is what makes fishing the spawn in Mexico different and difficult. The spawn should last until the next full moon and then the big bass should be biting again and be suspended in the trees and off the points just like old times. |
