At 6am the dawn came and we were off to a most incredible morning of Peacock Bass fishing. Humberto our host, Eric the Lodge manager and jeep sticker and myself were off with our guide Jose cracking the throttle wide open. Trees whirred by as the 45 horse Johnson pushed us toward our fist fishing spot just 5 minutes from camp.

Before fishing 10 minutes we had boated two nice Peacocks one about 2.5 pounds and the other around 4.

It just got better from there. By noon we had boated 54 Peacocks that averaged around 4 pounds. The largest was 10.1 and we had 3 others on that we saw that were that large or larger.

Often we had double and triple hookups.

After a delicious lunch, at camp we headed back out on the lake at 3 for more fishing. The bite was slightly slower but we still managed another 24 nice Peacocks before heading in at 5:30.

The afternoon fish came on a combination of top water, jerk baits and white 1/4 ounce jigs.

We missed 2 or 3 more fish in the double digit class on top water blow ups. Among the afternoon fish was a seven a couple 4 pounders and a big fish on a jerk bait that went around 15 pounds.

Not that the fishing wasn’t totally riveting but your couldn’t ignore the commotion from the jungle now and then. Macaws and green Parrots squawked their alarm and there was the almost constant cacophony of the Araguatos (Howler Monkeys). Their weird cries, sometimes so loud, you scanned the skies for a jetliner, were almost mesmerizing.

Back at camp we recounted the days activities over a few cold drinks then showered and sat down to a feast of pork chops, a delicious dish of sliced beets, sliced potatoes toped with sliced hard boiled eggs and a cream sauce. Cake for desert.
