Lake Baccarac is awesome!
The fishing here for the month of January and the first week of February 2002 continues to impress everyone, from fisrt time anglers to wily veterans. According to Felipe Valdez, the general manager of Chapman-Balderrama operations, the fishing has been phenomenal.
Lake Baccarac today reminds me of the golden era of 10-15 years ago. Right now Baccarac is far and away the hottest bass lake in Mexico. All indications point to a fabulous season for us here.
The top water bite in the early morning and late afternoon is extraordinary. Several substantial fish have been caught that have exceeded 12 lbs. The largest bass taken in January was 16lbs
3oz behemoth landed by Randal Roberts of Plainview, Texas.
He hooked the fish on spinnerbait at 7:30 in the morning.
Runner up honors go to Ron Smith who caught a 14lbs 5oz
lunker on February 2nd at 7:10 A.M. during an incredible top water session that wore out the angler, and his lure of choice
a 3/4 oz Pop R.
The Hickman party from Deer Park, Texas also experienced terrific action during their visit. Worms and spinner-baits have produced solid, consistent fishing throughout the day.
The most productive baits have been:
Top water Pop-R and Zara Spook; spinner bait white and chartreuse colors; and plastic worm 8 to 10 inch black or motor oil colored. Yamamoto and Zenkos have also attracted many 10lb+ fish. Recommended line test is 17 to 20 lb, and in spite of that line strenght, several Grandes have broken off.
The weather has been very pleasant. Moderate temperatures and cloudless skies predominate, with highs topping out in the hight 70s to low 80s. Mornings are mild with temperatures in the mid 50s. The lake level is currently at about 60% capacity.
For the opportunity to catch trophy class bass, Lake Baccarac has no equal in Mexico. Gigantic fish are landed throughout the day on any variety of lure presentations. Additionally, the lake average is currently 2 1/2 to 3 lbs. a claim that cannot be matched anywhere else in Mexico.
As Felipe puts it, the true excitement of Lake Baccarac right now is that the potential for catching exceptional bass is at its highest level in years. The possibility of landing a 20 plus lb. lunker bass has never been greater.
