— Lake Baccarac is back!
After a nine month reprieve from sport fishing, Lake Baccarac re-opened on December 27th. Acording to Felipe Valdez, the General Manager of Chapman-Balderrama operations, the fishing has been phenomenal.
Lake Baccarac today reminds me of the golden era of 10-15 years ago. Right now Baccarac is far and away the hottest bass lake in Mexico. All indications point to a fabulous season for us here.
The top water bite in the early morning and late afternoon is extraordinary. Several large fish have been caught that have exceeded 12 lbs. The fishing on December 27th, produced a 13 lb. 10 oz. bass caught by Mike Bolinger, who was in a group of 14 anglers from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Additionally, Kenso Tokunaga and a group of five other japanese fishermen, landed nine bass over 9 lbs. the first day that were all hooked on 8 inch Yamamoto grubs.
Worms and spinner-baits have also prodeced solid, consistent fishing throughout the day. The most productive baits have been:
Top water Pop-R and Zara Spook; spinner bait white and chartreuse colors; and plastic worms 8 to 10 in black or motor oil colored. Recommended line tests is 17 to 20 lb, and in spite of that line strength, several Grandes have brocken off.
The weather has been very pleasant. Mild temperatures and cloudless skies predominate, with highs topping out in the mid 70s. Mornings are cold with temperatures in the low 40s.The lake level is currently at about 60% capacity.
For the opportunity to catch throphy class bass, Lake Baccarac has no equal in Mexico. Large fish are landed throughout the day on any variety of lure presentations. Additionally, the lake average is currently 2 1/2 to 3 lbs. a claim that cannot be matched anywhere else in Mexico. As Felipe puts it, the true excitement of Lake Baccarac right now is that the potential for catching exceptional bass is at its highest level in years. The possibility of landing a 20 plus lb. lunker bass has never been greater.
